Armenian Catholic Church, Gheorgheni

The Armenians settled in Gheorgheni in 1688. Catholic priest Ferenczy György established a cemetery for foreigners near an old chapel. The chapel was built around 1450 in Gothic style. This chapel was ceded to the Armenians, who added the current church to it. On the attic of one of the bastions, a Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary from the medieval chapel was found. The church has the appearance of a fortress, being surrounded by a stone wall with two octagonal towers and steep roofs, with shooting apertures. The construction costs were covered by donations from various Armenian associations and Armenian families. The tower, according to the Armenian inscription on it, was built in 1734 by Lukács János at his own expense. The church is surrounded by an irregular crenellated wall, with two smaller buildings on the eastern and western sides. In the stone wall's recesses, images depicting scenes of Christ's Passion, created around 1750, were placed, which are now located in the Armenian parish building. The building was renovated in 1889, during which the neobaroque ceiling frescoes and painted window ironwork were created.
